From time to time I get the question:
“Can you help me even if my thyroid gland was removed?”
First of all, there are two primary reasons why people have their thyroid gland surgically removed:
1. Thyroid cancer.
2. Graves disease (hyperthyroidism).
After surgical removal of the thyroid gland, the patient will require thyroid replacement medicine for the rest of his or her life. That part should be clear.
However, there are many other factors which regulate thyroid function. Many of these are unrelated to taking medicine.
For example, you could still have an autoimmune problem called Hashimoto’s disease. This can actually block the hormone from getting into your cells.
You can have a problem converting T4 into T3 (the active form of the hormone). You could have a problem with sex hormone imbalance which could throw off your body’s ability to transport thyroid hormone. This means even if you’re taking the right medicine with the right dose at the right time, you could still suffer with low thyroid symptoms. You could have numerous other hidden “triggers” all of which we can solve through our functional medicine clinic.
If you still have low thyroid symptoms then we know that there is another culprit that is affecting your ability to use those hormones. Until we discover what that culprit is and change/fix it, you will always struggle with those symptoms.
Our functional approach gets to the root causes of the symptoms and will help you feel and function better. We will discover what is interfering with you ability to use the thyroid hormone that you are taking every day.
So the answer to the question is – YES, we can definitely still help you!
